We all know Naughty Dog was exploring and brainstorming ideas for The Last Of Us sequel, but they had to put it on ice to work on Uncharted 4.
And now in a new interview Naughty Dog’s creative director, Neil Druckmann gives us an update and addressed Nolan North’s statement indicating a sequel was coming: “I can say that was kind of a surprise for us for him (North) to say that.
I was like ‘Oh he knows more than we know [about] what we’re doing next.’ We joked about it afterwards during shoots and stuff.
“The answer is – and this is totally honest, and I’ve said this in the past – that when Bruce (Straley) and I moved over to Uncharted 4, we were brainstorming ideas for The Last Of Us 2 with new characters; ideas for TLOU 2 with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas.
And just as we were getting close to settling or narrowing that list down, we were asked to work on Uncharted 4.”
He adds that a small team had been working on those prototypes and then everyone moved over to Uncharted 4. “You know, there’s a part of me that’s really looking forward to going back to those things, but I have no cycles left in my mind even to be thinking about that right now!
So, I guess he (North) was kind of right in that we were working on stuff, but we don’t know what we’re doing next and we won’t know until probably a few months after we finish Uncharted 4,” Druckmann concluded.

I want New characters and new environments (of course) but when it comes to joel and ellie, i would love them to return but i dont want them as the main focus..i want some the new characters to develop..and obviously with a new story to be heard.

We’ve all grown to love Joel and Ellie, I know I have quite a lot! I would love to see what happened to them after that last scene and if Ellie finally confronts Joel about what really happened back at Salt Lake City hospital with Marlene. Will Joel tell the truth? Will Ellie continue their original mission and sacrifice herself for the sake of humanity OR do they find another way?
I think they should definitely continue their story but also with the possibility of new characters/stories. Also it would be really great if you could play multiplayer split screen just saying lol…

Ellie already confronted Joel about what happened at the end and Joel lies to her, confirming to Ellie that he was previously telling the truth about how the Fireflies had stopped looking for a cure when this was really a lie. So no, Joel did not tell the truth. Also Joel already massacred every single person that was working on the cure so any chance of the continuation of research efforts are pretty much gone. Finally how would Ellie verify if Joel was telling the truth or not? Unless of course she escapes Tommy’s dam and goes back to Salt Lake City only to find all the fireflies dead and confirming that Joel was lying to her, than in this situation there are seeds for a sequel.

What about playing as Ellie after the events of TLOU1… she knows that joel lied to her and now goes on a journey (alone) to sacrifice herself for humanity (you know, with her being the cure and stuff). Throughout the whole game the player would be aware that in the end, this character you really love is probably going to die… but you just don’t know it for certain until you reached the end… that would truly be a mindf#ck and you would always have to force yourself to keep playing, since you want the girl to live… just an idea… sorry for any mistakes, I’m not a native speaker

If they want to continue with the same characters and story they should do a prologue (like the last game) where Joel and Ellie are arriving to the city they were outside of at the end of the first game. As they approach the gates Joel is murdered by the occupants of the city and dies in Ellie’s arms. The screen cuts to black and then a title card appears: “20 Years Later”. An adult Ellie is startled out of bed (like Joel in the first game) and then the story can be about whatever they want it to be about.

I don’t think Ellie and Joel have to be in the story directly. There could be references, flashbacks or something of the sort.
Why? I think the open-ended nature of the ending was apt for the kind of game it was. It explored themes of morality, love and loyalty and left us to make conclusions. Exploring ‘the after’ will answer the moral questions for us and rob us of participating in the game’s dilemma, and I think our participation is what made the game so outstanding.
That’s the unsentimental answer. Otherwise, yes. Yes I’d like to see this pair again. Older though.
I imagine that theirs would still be a difficult relationship given Joel’s broken moral compass and dysfunctional emotions. Love yes, but a lot of anger and silence too.
I kind of see Ellie going through periods of getting tired of Joel’s unpredictable moods (brought on by the gnawing guilt of lying to Ellie and maybe taking away the world’s only chance of a cure).
Anyway, less talk more making of game.
I want to see Joel and Ellie in THE LAST OF US 2 with new enemies and allies.
What about Joel dying in the prologue, then its a grown up Ellie as the main character.
even though troy baker and ashley johnson’s acts and their characters were phenomenal, i think the game needs new characters. well i guess its because i finished the damn game more than a dozen times lol

I want a Tarantino-Walking Dead story. One with a old and dying Joel, a grown up Ellie, and a group of Survivors. One that jumps from different perspectives in Tarantino fashion but has a Walking Dead surprise element to it.

A c ustomisable character can’t play a role like Joel did for TLOU.
Open world games cannot tell the kinds of stories that Naughty Dog told with TLOU. There is no narrative impetus, no sense of urgency. Open world games are full of moments where you accept the quest to “Quickly! Defend the mine from marauders!” only to delay that quest because you have to hunt down 15 more Red Plants or finish mapping a region out or any other minute little task Ubisoft threw at you. No thanks, keep TLOU on rails pls.

Guess I wouldn’t want Joel and Ellie to play a huge rule in The last of us 2. Not because I don’t like em, but I’m afraid we’ll be seeing the world of the The last of us only in their perspective. Personally, I’d like to see a different view on that world.
We don’t need Ellie in the story , we need Joel his backstory , how he mett Bill and Jess . How he survived with his brother . We need a prequel not a sequel!
I would love Ellie and Joel to be in the last of us 2 and I would really love the last of 2 the first game was really unspeakable because it had a lot of emotion and violence which make a perfect combination The last of us is the only zombie game that makes it feel real and the only zombie game I’m interested in .CREATORS please for the sake of all the last of us fans make the last of us 2 please

I would really prefer to come back to Ellie and Joel later. It would be more interesting, I think, to do a new story, from maybe a perspective of a Firefly post Ellie/Joel. Where do they go from there? What is their new game plan? Maybe incorporate news of the events of Ellie and Joel as it slowly makes its way around.
And then, after expanding the world a bit more, come back to Joel and Ellie, or Ellie minus Joel or vice versa.
As much as I absolutely love Joel & Ellie, and would love to see them again, I really think their time is done. The story played out, and it needs to be left where it is. TLOU world, however – is RIPE for more stories to be told. Also, genetically, it’s highly unlikely Ellie is the only person who’s bitten and immune; and highly unlikely America is the only place in the world where Scientists capable of finding a cure exist. The Fireflies would be one of many groups looking for a cure, and perhaps not the best equipped of those groups either.
TLOU world certainly has a lot more stories in it, and quite possibly Joel or Ellie could make a Cameo in TLOU2. However, I think it would be forcing the story past what it’s good for to bring Joel & Ellie back as main characters.
It was already mentioned in TLOU that there were a lot of people like Ellie, and that all their attempts to find a vaccine by taking out their brain was all for naught.

To play main characters my favourites or if they went new options route with different new characters or customisable characters and not on a rails system type game going from A to B instead a openworld adventure were there’s survival scavenging roaming wilderness,towns,city’s etc think cross between games The last of us & States of decay and walking dead tv series zombie fans favourite situation. not rubbish as usual games ubisoft type were you to unlock areas boring. or 1st person call of duty. real zombie fans want game that’s been close be neva done before think state of decay with the time taken and story ,design ,characters of the last of us but with need to travel on foot by horse back or vehicles you repair or find along your individual journeys wounding on accessible farm land,factorys,crash sites,overwhelmed check points camps, small towns or to city’s you see in the distance and take risk of exploring. situation and the beginning of a players experience walking dead + storys design characters of the last of us + openworld free roam style statement of decay & Rd undead + days gone. with option play in 1st/3rd person mode choice or customisable option of new characters and your options of travelling world.
The Last of Us was a very special game where you couldn’t help but to care about and love the characters. It was an emotional roller-coaster that I still love to play over and over sometimes. I would love to see the story continue with Joel and Ellie though I would not want either of them to die. I know Joel is getting on, especially in that kind of world, but I see him as a tough old bastard who refuses to die. I would love to see the story continue on from where it left off and it would be nice to see Joel settle down with someone in the end with Ellie not far away… I can picture Joel developing some kind of armour in the colony for protection against bites before their journey.
I’d love a new TLOU game, especially with Joel and Ellie. But I’m afraid it might ruin the story and characters we love so much.
I’m sure it wouldn’t, but if that possibillity is there.. Then I’d rather leave the beloved story as it is.

Just move onto some other characters for the main story and make a dlc for a sequel of Joel and Ellie.
Id like to see Joel and Ellie end up back at tommies..at some point, the fireflies find out that tommie is Joel’s brother and come looking for Ellie to kill her. Ellie finds out about Joel’s lie, and Ellie has to face her mortality. As some time has passes Ellie & Joel have developed more like a Joel and tess relationship without the romance. They have there shit together and Ellie is a kickass fighter.. Ellie Being more like 18 years of age not 14, she is a woman now. Question will be, will Ellie understand why Joel lied and with Joel she has a life to fight for. Or will she, leave Joel. And find her own way to / with the fireflies to find out her own truth.. That would be awesome… ? And, Joel not being able to let Ellie go, Joel and tommy go after Ellie, killing anyone that gets in there way.. When Joel and tommy find Ellie. Does Ellie give her life foe a maybe solution or do Joel , Ellie and tommy. Unit to escape the fireflies, as Ellie relies life is worth living. Loss, has made her value her life with Joel and tommies crew. Surprise me..
What would be interesting to see, if the game started after Sarah’s death and how joel meet tess and why Joel’s and tommys relationship broke down.. That would be interest to explore. Like the left behind dlc you could flash back for a section of the game. Joel isn’t over tess ‘so death.. And if Joel and Ellie return to tommy at some point Joel and tommy could do a mission together that resolves any issues. Great character arch resolution. Then the fireflies come for Ellie, interesting enough, if Joel picked up Marlene’s tape recording from the last level of last game he would have proof that there were others like Ellie and all attempts to find a cure failed. And before you as there is no tape. Marlene made two tapes.. Interesting to see, how the unanswered questions from first game answered in second one. I hate having questions unanswered.
Yes I think we can all agree that we want to see Ellie and Joel in the next one and I think you guy’s should make this a never ending game and just find some way to keep the story going because I’m sure I’m not the only one who loved the story and I just don’t want to see it end. It almost gave me the same feeling that the end of Battlestar Galactica gave me at its end, knowing it was the end of the show and the amazing story. I’ve accepted those endings but not this one damnit!
