µTorrent (or uTorrent; commonly abbreviated as “µT” or “uT“) is a freewareclosed source BitTorrent client owned by BitTorrent, Inc.

It is the most widely used BitTorrent client outside China, where Xunlei is more popular. It gets the “µ” in its name from the SI prefix ”micro-“, referring to the program’s small memory footprint: the program is designed to use minimal computer resources while offering functionality comparable to larger BitTorrent clients such as Vuze or BitComet.

The program has received consistently good reviews for its feature set, performance, stability, and support for older hardware and versions of Windows. A report showed that µTorrent is the second most popular BitTorrent client (after the Chinese Xunlei). It is available for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. A µTorrent Server is available for Linux. All versions are written in C++.

Micro-Sized Yet Feature Filled

Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in µTorrent, including bandwidthprioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading and Mainline DHT (compatible with BitComet). Additionally, µTorrent supports the Protocol Encryption joint specification (compatible with Azureus 2.4.0.0 and above, BitComet 0.63 and above) and peer exchange.

Resource-Friendly

µTorrent was written with efficiency in mind. Unlike many torrent clients, it does not hog valuablesystem resources – typically using less than 6MB of memory, allowing you to use the computer as if it weren’t there at all. Additionally, the program itself is contained within a single executable less than 220 KB in size.

µTorrent 3.1 Build 26508 RC2 1

Skinnable and Localized

Various icon, toolbar graphic and status icon replacements are available, and creating your own is very simple. µTorrent also has support for localization, and with a language file present, will automatically switch to your system language. If your language isn’t available, you can easily add your own, or edit other existing translations to improve them!

Actively Developed and Improved

The developer puts in a lot of time working on features and making things more user-friendly. Releases only come out when they’re ready, with no schedule pressures, so the few bugs that appear are quickly addressed and fixed.

What’s new in this release:

  • Fix: flickering progress bars for checking torrents
  • Fix: fix shutdown hang where a hash job would be left hanging, preventing shutdown
  • Change: explicitly show the torrent state when it’s done downloading but flushing to disk
  • Change: show trackers tab by default
  • Change: hide ‘App’ column by default
