CD Projekt RED’s action role-playing hack and slash video game, The Witcher is getting a live-action treatment.
The film will be based on Andrzej Sapkowski novel series. It will be directed by Polish illustrator, animator and director, Tomasz Bagiński.
Bagiński is known for directing The Cathedral (2002), Fallen Art (2004), opening cinematics for The Witcher (2007) & The Witcher 2 (2012).
American television producer and writer, Thania St. John is working on the script based on themes from the short stories ‘The Witcher’ and ‘Lesser Evil’ from ‘The Last Wish’ collection.
Thania St. John has written and produced a number of notable television series including 21 Jump Street, Life Goes On, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Unnatural History.
The film will be produced by The Sean Daniel Company’s Sean Daniel and Jason Brown, popularly known for producing The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, The Expanse, and the upcoming remake of Ben-Hur.
Jarosław Sawko and Piotr Sikora from Studio Platige Films will server as co-producers. It will be an “introduction to the Witcher’s world and is planned to be the beginning of a series.”
CD Projekt Red isn’t involved in the film as far as we know, despite them owning the rights to The Witcher brand. We will probably hear more when the film nears the release.
The Witcher was previously adapted into a feature film in 2001 as The Hexer, screened exclusively in Polish. It also had a TV series continuation.
The studios are yet to find a star to play the lead character, Geralt.
The Witcher Movie is planned for 2017 release.
