Lionsgate & Millennium Films’ American series of ensemble action films, The Expendables is getting a fourth installment.
Even thought the third installment in The Expendables film series, The Expendables 3 grossed $39.3 million in North America and $166.9 million in other territories for a total gross of $206.2 million, the lowest box office in the franchise.
The fourth installment is expected to go into production next year (partly in China). Reportedly, the movie will have a budget north of $100 million when it starts filming in 2016 for a 2017 release date.
Cast members and directors are yet to be announced, but the movie will feature all-action stars from the previous three installments.
The franchise features Sylvester Stallone as mercenary team leader Barney Ross and the core group includes Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
China’s market was responsible for The Expendables 3‘s $78 million collections. So when founder and CEO of Crystal Sky Pictures & SP International, Steven Paul was asked why they are so successful in China?
He replied: “What seems to work in their favor in China, is that these movies are good old-fashioned shoot ’em up entertainment.”
The Expendables 4 starts filming in 2016 for a 2017 release.
