Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater goes back to its roots in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD.
This downloadable title will attempt to revamp the THPS brand after years of debatably-good gimmicks by removing them and focusing on what made the series so great in the first place: skateboarding.
Whether you were an actual boarder, or could barely walk, you were able to pull off gravity-defying tricks with ease. For most of us, it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. The manual, the score-multiplying move which made it’s debut in THPS 2 will allow you to do all the big combos you wanted to on the first game’s maps.
In this next installment, using Neversoft’s original code in order to preserve the layout accuracy from the first two games, developer Robomodo is given the opportunity to redeem themselves after the poorly-received, peripheral-based TH: Ride, and Shred, by recreating some of the most classic levels from THPS 1&2 for the next generation.
THPS HD has seven confirmed levels, which are: Warehouse, School 2, Mall, Phoenix, Hanger, Marseilles, and Venice. Whether more will come with the game’s release or via downloadable map packs is yet to be told.
Characters, however, will have a mix of older with more modern skateboarders. They include: Tony Hawk (of course) Andrew Reynolds, Rodney Mullen, Eric Koston, Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins, Nyjah Huston, Chris Cole, and Hawk’s son, Riley. Tony Hawk’s polygonal self from the first game is also said to make an appearance. Even though THPS 2 was the first game in the series to offer custom characters, it has yet to be mentioned whether HD will offer this feature or anything similar.

The area of the game’s unannounced selection of music is up to much debate and criticism. One of the biggest parts of nostalgia from the early years of the franchise is the soundtrack, and the people have been speaking out. It’s about half-and-half, on whether Robomodo should use the same songs from the originals, or to introduce a new playlist of songs to get you in a grinding mood. Both sides bring up valid points, but as of yet, no word is being released on this highly sensitive subject.
All in all, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is shaping up to be a hit. Not only will it bring back old customers to relive their glory days, it will give the younger crowd a chance to experience where the Pro Skater series started.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD is slated for release via download on PSN and XBLA sometime this summer for “about $15”.
