“We have no intention of immediately shifting from the PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4,” says Sony Japan president Hiroshi Kawano.
Speaking with Famitsu, Kawano said, “It’s been seven years since the release of the PS3 and the console continues to sell at a constant pace, plus we have many upcoming titles. We have no intention of immediately shifting from the PS3 to the PS4.”
With the 2014 launch of our cloud service in the US allowing users to play PS3 games on the PS4, some people may switch consoles from the PS3 to the PS4.
But that’ll be a gradual process, and to say ‘we’re releasing a new console, so trade in your old ones for it’ would be a maker’s ego talking, plain and simple.”
PS4 is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Thats good. I really wish Ps4 was backwards compatible though!
Once they get the Gaikai service up and running it essentially will be backwards compatible just not in the traditional sense.
I cant see how the cloud works with ps4
Playstation cloud Will work in the same sense as steam and onlive.
I have no idea what steam is though
Steam works the same way netflix does. You stream games from a server. You pay. For each game then stream it. You will need a internet connection to make this work on the ps4
Steam is an online PC game service provided by Valve. Similar to PSN or XBL.
I’m not sure how lag is addressed, but games will be run between multiple shared servers of compatible architecture to their original consoles with minimal processing by the ps4. It’s essentially the fat-server/thin-client model of client server computing and the PS4 is the client. Wikipedia probably explains it fairly well. Playstation Plus will likely fund most of the maintenance
Except you’ll need to pay for everything again :)
Lol, you fanboys are hilarious. When someone asks for backwards compatibility, they are asking because they want to be able to play the games they’ve already purchased on the new console. Being able to essentially repurchase a game does not make it backwards compatible.
Cloud computing/gaming is not backwards compatibility. Games will be run on servers that operate similarly to their native console. It’s like saying a PS3 is backwards compatible with itself. The PS4 is basically a remote and window.
Making the PS3 backwards compatible with the PS2 was probably Sony’s biggest mistake on the launch of the PS3. It made the hardware unnecessarily expensive and that caused the PS3 to trail behind the XBOX 360 for a long time.
No wonder they removed the backwards compatibility already in the second ed. of the PS3.
I fully understand why Sony won’t be making the same mistake again. And that’s before we arrive at the fact that the x86-architecture makes it practically impossible.
I’m simply going to keep my PS3 alongside my new PS4. No reason to throw it out.
real good point man. Your right We can just play our current ps3s. I have no desire to trade mine in. I can play ps3 and ps2 games on it. So to play my ps4 games I just need a ps4. My tv has 3 hdmi ports only 2 bening used so its as simple as turning my ps3 on when i want to play it. You make a great point. They hit a nice price point with ps4 for the power and the features.
So you wont even be able to download ps3 games from the psn store that you already purchased to the ps4 because it is not backwards compatible or does this just have to do with the ps3 disc only.
disc and digital. It’s sort of like trying to run mac os x on a pc. The architecture of the ps3 would actually require a system a couple more times powerful than a ps4 to emulate ps3 at a choppy reduced framerate. Gaikai will likely address this by running older games on remote servers of similar architecture.
i have a question, will ps3 digital downloaded games from the psstore can be played on a ps4 too directly from ur playstation account?
No, at least not right away. It’s not that you have a new console, it’s that the console’s infrastructure is entirely different from the previous model. This is why neither next-gen consoles will be backwards compatible. They have to almost remake the games in order for them to be available on the PS4 or the XBONE.
No, since the PS3’s online service is not the same than the PS4’s (PS4’s one will not be free).
do you suggest buying the initial version? or it may come with bugs like the ps3 first had?
Well said. I have spent a lot of money over the years. Plus i dont have broadband and never will in my area so its no use to me
Yeah thats the sucky part about it.
I can’t see that going over well with ps3 games
man I bet you have to have some really fast net
Calling us fan boys is no insult sir lol we are simply dedicated to the brand we love. They respect our opinions and bring good choices. End of. I am also not insulting or mocking your message. On note. Who cares if it is backwards. This is next gen. New games, over 100 of them actually. so why do people need to ask if it can play old games. Keep fresh for what is KNEW

I don’t care if the next-gen consoles are backwards compatible or not either. I hope my previous comment didn’t come off as such. I was just commenting on how many people make excuses. It’s not backwards compatible, that’s no big deal, don’t make it one and don’t lie just because it’s the console you’ve sworn allegiance to.
Actually, that’s not how Steam works…
You have to download the games before playing them, just like buying a game through PSN and the PlayStation Store. Only difference is that it’s on your PC instead of your PS3. :)
Then i must be thinking of onlive because onlive i can play games on my tabet with an internet connection provided that i buy the the game and then stream it.
If the PS 4 was backwards compatible it would probably cost $499-$599 as putting the PS 3’s chip into the PS 4 would raise the price of the console and Sony has learned from their PS 3 mistake in not to launch an overly priced console.
I always give it a year before buying a new console. Makes sure of kink-absence, cheaper and more games by then.
