Sony’s Gaikai-enabled streaming game service, PlayStation Now (PS Now) announced earlier this week requires a minimum 5mbps internet connection, according to SCEA social media manager Sid Shuman.

“At this early stage of PS Now’s development, pixel counters and graphics aficionados might spot some minor concessions in the visual department, such as compression artifacts, consistent with high-quality internet video or gameplay streamed via PS Vita Remote Play,” said Shuman.

He adds, “A player’s experience with PS Now will depend on the overall quality of the broadband internet connection.

The PS Now team is currently estimating that a 5 mbps connection will provide a good experience for most game, and they’ll be gathering user feedback during the closed beta before announcing more details.”

Elsewhere, SCEA’s management team, Matthew Harper also said, “We recommend a 5MBPS+ connection. In our internal tests, users with this bandwidth or greater have been enjoying a low latency, high-quality gaming experience.

PS Now tests your connection of each game and optimizes for quality if you are above the minimum requirements. We strive to make the gameplay experience feel as if the game is being played locally on their device – fast and responsive (including for FPS and games with twitch mechanics).

The Closed Beta will definitely provide a great opportunity to test the experience with gamers with varying connection speeds and our developers will, of course, be working diligently to optimize the service based upon the feedback we receive from the community.”
