EA and Maxis released the first “insider look” at the sparkling new engine GlassBox.

The new SimCity is driven by Maxis’ new engine GlassBox, which supports some of the most advanced features and cutting edge aspects that will make this the deepest, richest and most accessible simulation the series have ever witnessed.

The trailer shows how effects and animation are tied to simulation rules, and how terrain and features are generated from map layers, as well as discussing the movement of resources and agents.

SimCity announced at GDC,  is described as “a true rebirth of the franchise that brings the depth of simulation that has been the series hallmark for more than two decades and marries it with next generation accessibility and a robust multiplayer mode, giving players the power to change a world together.”

“For the first time in SimCity franchise history, players’ decisions will have long-lasting repercussions that will extend beyond their city limits.

Only a PC version is announced right now and is expected to launch in 2013, with other platforms – including browser and mobile clients is unconfirmed.
