Walt Disney Pictures & Lucasfilm debuted the trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story during NBC’s coverage of Rio Olympics.
It will be the first stand-alone Star Wars Anthology film, and the ninth theatrical feature film in the series.
Set in the Star Wars universe shortly before the events of A New Hope, the story will center on a group of Rebel spies on a mission to steal the plans for the Galactic Empire’s new weapon, the Death Star.
“An all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction.
This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.”
Directed by Gareth Edwards, written by Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz, from an idea by visual effects supervisor John Knoll.
John Knoll is executive producing the film along with Simon Emanuel and Jason McGatlin.
Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To serve as produce with John Swartz attached to co-produce.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be released on December 16, 2016.
