After denying that there weren’t any plans for Iron Man 4, Robert Downey Jr. hints at future Tony Stark / Iron Man appearances in Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In a recent interview with THR, Downey Jr. said, “I’m sure we’ll ride that thing. You’ve got to surf that all the way in to shore.
I think I was at the forefront of something that was coming into being, and I think it has carried me as much as I have informed it.
That’s the healthy way to look at it. It’s so easy to become inflated by the successes, but what they really are are long, strong trends. It’s just another wave.”
Downey is currently signed for third untitled Avengers movie, but not another solo Iron Man feature. He has hinted the possibility of Iron Man 4, but at times he makes it seem unlikely and then says he might consider it. We will keep an eye on that.
Do you think he should do Iron Man 4? sound off in the comments below.
For now we’ll see Tony Stark/Iron Man in Avengers: Age of Ultron, due out May 1, 2015.

Depends who will direct it, there was rumours that mel gibson was going to direct. No thanks. It also depends how the avengers 2 ends. Other than that why not? Gotta milk the franchise
he is getting older. so if he does Iron man 4 its pretty certain it his last. An its true RDJ´s iron man was the one that began this marvel trend. i would love to see another iron man movie whit RDJ but perhaps its time to retire the franchise for now and pass the torch over new marvel characters
Only if it is more like the first Iron Man and less like #3.
I read that exact same line/quote in its proper context in his Deadline.com interview. It goes on to joke about how much RDJ gets along with and respects Mel Gibson and the media/society’s misperception or misinterpretation of his views and personality and that he deserves redemption or a chance at such. Additionally, they joke about if an Iron Man 4 were to happen, he’d only do it with Mel directing it. But, we all obviously know neither of those are in plans to happen because the MCU makes more sense to leave RDJ’s Tony Stark exactly where he is and only contractually let his Iron Man show up in Avengers 2 and 3 and then be done (until many many decades have past and someone else could give an equally good but distinguishable Tony Stark portrayal).
There are no plans for an Iron Man 4 simply because there’s no need for it. His (Tony Stark’s) personal story arc was brought to completion in the 3rd film (even if we don’t like how it came to be, as there’s parts I wasn’t fully happy with, so be it), so there’s no need for the character to show any more development except what we’ll get in RDJ’s last 2 contracted films: Avengers 2 & 3. Not only do we still have to see Cap and Thor’s trilogies complete themselves in another Phase, but Marvel also has soooooooooo many more characters to put on the big screen for us to see that there’s no need to beat 1 character to death in the way Superman and Batman are being done by DC/WB. Hell, with Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel Studios has proven they can do no wrong with putting any of their characters they want PROPERLY on the big screen. I say “PROPERLY” because Sony & Fox think they can alter or incorrectly put Marvel characters on the big screen and we’ll 100% approve or enjoy it. But, deep down, we know Marvel can and would do it correctly and better. And while some (it should only be some if you truly know the characters outside of the movies, which doesn’t mean you need to read comics because I don’t; my sources of Marvel knowledge are the trading cards and marvel.wikia) will disagree with me, I just didn’t enjoy X-Men: Days of Future Past at all for all those many continuity errors, incorrect character portrayals and various changes from the source materials that disrespect it more than acknowledge it because it’s 1 thing to make minor changes for the benefit of the film and another to completely ruin the original foundation. As for Amazing Spider-Man 2, at least it captured the “spirit of a comicbook” with its simple story, romantic chemistry, one-dimensional villains and nods and hints to its source materials (be they original or Ultimate).
So, Bring on Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and all the others rumored to be coming: Black Panther, Captain Marvel (aka Mar-Vell, that is, while DC’s incarnation now is named Shazam!), the Inhumans and any others that can’t be claimed by Fox (X-Men/mutants & Fantastic Four) or Sony (Spider-Man and affiliated characters).
