Robert Downey Jr. has joined Anthony and Joe Russo’s upcoming untitled American superhero film, Captain America 3, according to a report.

Tony Stark/Iron Man will play a major role in setting up the Civil War storyline from comics in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The storyline will depicts a division among superheroes on different sides of the issue of government registration, with opposing groups led by Iron Man and Captain America.

Tony Stark/Iron Man “supports the program, but Rogers does not, saying it threatens civil liberties, causing sides to be taken and Rogers, among others, to go on the run to avoid arrest.

The moral question and battle with his Avengers teammate essentially makes Stark a villain of sorts in Captain America 3, providing Downey with a meaty role he could play out into future Marvel films, including a fourth Avengers, according to the report.

According to Variety’s sources, Initially Iron Man had a small role in the film, but RDJ wanted a bigger part (more screen-time and payout). This lead Marvel Entertainment’s Chief executive officer, Ike Perlmutter ordering the screenwriters to write RDJ out of the script, but Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige convinced Perlmutter not to write him off.

Previous week, Downey hinted that Marvel has plans for Iron Man, but that won’t be Iron Man 4, now it seems likely that RDJ was hinting at Captain America 3.
