Activision announced the initial sales figures for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Launching earlier this week, across all platforms and regions.
Modern Warfare 3 enjoyed “the biggest entertainment launch ever” with an estimated sell-through of more than $400 dollars in its first 24 hours in the US and UK alone, selling a whopping 6.5 million copies in the process.
Those are still “estimated” figures though, based on “Charttrack and retail customer sell-through information.”
To compare, Black Ops‘ sold 5.6 million units in 2010 and made $360 million’s worth of business last year in the same time frame, while Modern Warfare 2 sold 4.7 million and made $310 in 2009.
“We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories,” Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick says.
“Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Lord of the Rings,’ two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.”
This marks the third straight year that the Call of Duty franchise has set launch records not just for video games, but for entertainment mediums in general. Activision Publishing’s Eric Hirshberg had this to say about the recent launch.
“Call of Duty is more than a game. It’s become a major part of the pop cultural landscape. It is a game that core enthusiasts love, but that also consistently draws new people into the medium. It is the most intense, adrenaline pumping entertainment experience anywhere. I would like to thank our incredible teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games for making a brilliant game. But most of all, I would like to thank our millions of passionate fans worldwide. We made this game for you.”
