After Marvel official revealed the title for Captain America 3, Spider-Man fans have been speculating that Spider-Man might join Marvel Cinematic Universe with Chris Evans & Robert Downey Jr., that almost happened, according to the recent internal emails leak.

Sony has been the target of a aggressive attack from a hacker group that’s demanding the studio to stop the release of action comedy film, The Interview & today some internal emails have been released online.

Marvel Tried To Get Spider-Man For Captain America: Civil War 1

According to WSJ report, In the leaked emails, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment had “extensive discussions” about bringing Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which went all the way up to Sony CEO Kaz Hirai and Walt Disney CEO Robert Iger.

In an Oct 30 email, Sony Pictures Entertainment president Doug Belgrad tells co-chairman Amy Pascal about a potential scenario where Marvel produces a new Spider-Man trilogy, while Sony retains “creative control, marketing and distribution.”

The “creative control” part is surprising, since Marvel is known for making sure their creative vision doesn’t change (cf. Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man incident) and given the track record of recent Amazing Spider-Man films that fail to achieve commercial success or surpass Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002).

In a separate email, Amy Pascal tells a business partner that Marvel wanted to include Spider-Man in Captain America 3. Spider-Man is a Marvel Comics character, Sony owns the exclusive film rights.

The talks eventually broke down. Sony went ahead with its own Spider-Man movies & spinoffs. As of late November, executives were planning a “Spidey summit” for January to discuss future plans.

As of now, Drew Goddard’s Sinister Six is planned for November 16, 2016 followed by Venom in 2017 & The Amazing Spider-Man 3 in 2018. An animated Spider-Man comedy film is in development, which would be produced by Chris Miller & Phil Lord.

There’s no clue if Marvel Studios also reached out to Fox Studios for similar discussions, since Fox owns the movie rights to the X-Men & Fantastic Four superhero films.

Captain America: Civil War is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. It stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chadwick Boseman, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo.

The principal photography is scheduled to begin in April 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia. The film is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2016.
