Focus Features debuted the trailer for Loving, an upcoming British-American drama film directed and written by Jeff Nichols.
Starring Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga as Richard and Mildred Loving, the plaintiffs in the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court decision Loving v. Virginia, which invalidated state laws prohibiting interracial marriage.
The cast also includes Michael Shannon, Nick Kroll, Marton Csokas, Jon Bass and Bill Camp.
Inspired by the director Nancy Buirski’s documentary The Loving Story, the film celebrates the “real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving (portrayed by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown.
Their civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry – and their love story has become an inspiration to couples ever since.”
Produced by Ged Doherty, Sarah Green, Nancy Buirski, Colin Firth, Peter Saraf, and Marc Turtletaub.
Executive produced by Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Jack Turner, and Jared Ian Goldman.
The film was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
Loving is to be released on November 4, 2016.
