Pokemon is currently the hottest video game franchise in the world, thanks to the massive success of Pokemon GO.
According to Deadline, Legendary is looking to develop a live-action Pokemon movie, but the deal hasn’t been finalized yet.
If Legendary lands the deal, this will be the biggest video-game movie rights deal, which is around $5 million against 5% of first-dollar gross.
Reports first surfaced earlier this year that several studios, Legendary, Warner Bros and Sony were in a bidding war with Legendary nearing the deal, but everything went silent after that.
Nineteen animated Pokemon movies have been produced and distributed since 1998, though only five made it to the big screens in the United States.
Warner Bros. distributed the first three films, Pokémon: The First Movie—Mewtwo Strikes Back (1998) grossed $85 million, Pokémon: The Movie 2000—The Power of One (1999) grossed $43 million, and Pokémon 3: The Movie—Spell of the Unown (2000) grossed $17 million at the domestic box office.
The value of the movie is hot since the launch of Pokemon GO, a free-to-play location-based augmented reality mobile game allows players to capture, battle, and train virtual Pokémon who appear throughout the real world.
It makes use of GPS and the camera of compatible devices. Although the game is free-to-play, it supports in-app purchases of additional gameplay items.
The game pushed Nintendo’s stock price over 25% even though it is just a one-third investor in Pokemon.
Pokémon is a media franchise owned by The Pokémon Company, and created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995. It is centered on fictional creatures called “Pokémon”, which humans known as Pokémon Trainers catch and train to battle each other for sport.
