Creator and director of Metal Gear series, Hideo Kojima did not attend The Game Awards 2015 due to restrictions from Konami.

Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain won the award for Best Action/Adventure and Best Score/Soundtrack, but Kojima wasn’t at the show to accept the award, instead Kiefer Sutherland took the award on his behalf & Kojima Productions.

Host Geoff Keighley decided to explain to viewers why he couldn’t attend the show, “Mr. Kojima had every intention of being with us tonight, but unfortunately he was informed by a lawyer representing Konami just recently that he would not be allowed to travel to tonight’s award ceremony to accept any awards.

He’s still under an employment contract, it’s disappointing, and it’s inconceivable to me that an artist like Hideo would not be allowed to come here and celebrate with his peers and his fellow teammates.”

Hideo is in Tokyo right now watching the show.”

Right after the announcement, the crowd started to booo, which was reportedly started by Gears of War designer, Cliff Bleszinski.

“Yes, I just started this booing myself in here. #TheGameAwards love you @HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN tell it like it is @geoffkeighley,” Bleszinski tweeted.

Kojima later tweeted thanking fans for their support at The Game Awards.

Hideo Kojima reportedly left Konami on October 9, 2015 but is still under contract until this month.
