Joss Whedon is nearing a deal to write, direct and produce a standalone Batgirl movie for Warner Bros. and DC Films, according to Variety.
Once upon a time, Whedon was hired to write and direct a Wonder Woman. However, in February 2007, he left the project due to creative differences.
He also pitched a screenplay to adapt Batman as development started on what would eventually become Batman Begins.
Everything with WB fell apart and he went ahead to make his directorial debut with Universal Pictures’ American space Western film, Serenity (2005).
And then he directed the post-credits scene for Marvel‘s Thor and did the rewrite for Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011.
Marvel then signed him up to write, direct and produce The Avengers (2012) and then the sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).
Now going back to Batgirl, it is unknown what direction Whedon will take or how she will be introduced, but the film will also feature other characters from the world of Gotham, according to the report.
So we might see appearances from Batman, Nightwing, members of Suicide Squad or Gotham City Sirens, we will find out more about the movie soon!
The movie will be part of DC Extended Universe that also includes Wonder Woman, Justice League, Aquaman, The Batman, as well as another female-centric entry Gotham City Sirens.
No other producers are currently attached to the movie, although Toby Emmerich, Jon Berg and Geoff Johns will oversee the project.
Batgirl was first introduced in 1967 as Barbara Gordon by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff.
The daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon, the character debuted in Detective Comics #359, titled “The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!” by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino.
