Sony Pictures Entertainment hired Joe Carnahan to script the film adaptation of Naughty Dog’s video game series, Uncharted.
The project has been in development since 2008, American independent film director, screenwriter, producer and actor, Joe Carnahan boards the project as a screenwriter after director Seth Gordon left the project following Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman, Tom Rothman’s decision to take the project in a new creative direction.
Carnahan won’t be directing the Uncharted movie due to scheduling conflicts with Bad Boys 3, which will be his next directing gig.
He told Variety that he’d love to director Uncharted, however he can’t unless the production on Bad Boys 3/Uncharted is pushed back.
“In a perfect world I would love to do both, but right now, I’m only on board to write the script. Entering the world of Nathan Drake is a dream come true.
Archaeology today is in itself an antiquity, but that world has always fascinated me. Especially when you go to a museum today and wonder how a piece got there to begin with.
Plus, the property itself is so popular that it was hard to turn down an opportunity to work on it.”
Carnahan is best known for his films Blood, Guts, Bullets and Octane (1998), Narc (2002), Smokin’ Aces (2006), The A-Team (2010), and The Grey (2011).
He also writes and directed some episodes for NBC’s American crime thriller television series, The Blacklist.
The previous drafts were written by American screenwriters Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer; American film director, screenwriter, and producer David O. Russell; American husband and wife screenwriting team Cormac and Marianne Wibberle; American film and television director and producer David Guggenheim; American journalist, screenwriter and film producer Mark Boal.
The film would be produced by Avi Arad, Charles Roven, and Alex Gartner.
Uncharted is currently scheduled for a June 10 release, while Bad Boys 3 is set for June 2, 2017.
