Ubisoft has planned to focus solely on releasing games for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and ending the production for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2015, according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot.

“What we see is that this year is still fine for the PS3 and 360, but next year because they are selling very quickly, we’ll move to the new hardware, Yves Guillemot told Game Informer.

After 2015, it will be hard for us to create games for those systems.”

ACIV Black Flag (17)

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Watch Dogs were both cross-gen console games. This year, Assassin’s Creed Unity will be published only for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and Assassin’s Creed Rogue only for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This is clear indication that AC Rogue will be the last game on seventh generation consoles.

We were expecting support for PS3 and Xbox 360 for a little longer, since both consoles have more than 80 million install bases. Sony’s PS2 continued until January 4, 2013, when Sony finally announced that the PlayStation 2 had been discontinued after almost 13 years of production – one of the longest runs for a video game console.

Since Sony’s PlayStation 4 is doing so well with over 10 million units sold (as of August 12, 2014) and Microsoft’s Xbox One has sold over 5 million (as of April 17, 2014). It’s a indication that seventh generation consoles production will end before 2016.

He shifted the focus to Nintendo’s Wii U, he said, “What we see is that Nintendo customers don’t buy Assassin’s Creed. Last year, we sold in very small numbers.” Only 3% Wii U sales for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2014.

He adds, “What we see is that they are very interested in Just Dance, very interested by other kinds of games. So what we are trying to do is to focus more on the types of games they are interested in.

He goes on to assure that they are making an exception for Watch Dogs, and the title is still in works for Wii U. “[Watch Dogs] is coming to Wii U. It will be the only mature game we publish on it.”
