Take-Two Interactive announced today that Rockstar’s open world, action-adventure, Grand Theft Auto V has surpassed retail sales of more than $1 billion in its first three days on sale.

The sales data are internal estimates from the company. “We believe this marks the fastest that any entertainment property, including video games and feature films, has reached this significant milestone.”

“Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two. “We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto V.”

Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 took 15 days to reach $1bn, James Cameron’s Avatar took 17 days and Marvel’s The Avengers reached that milestone in 10 days.

GTA V previously achieved $800m within its first 24 hours on sale earlier this week, becoming the fastest-selling game in UK history.

Grand Theft Auto V is currently available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
