The next game in Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto series, GTA 6 has entered production, according to a report.

“Preliminary work” on Grand Theft Auto 6 has begun, but a location for the game is yet to be decided, according to TechRadar’s sources.

Additionally, The sources also reveal that Rocktar had plans to make a GTA game set in Tokyo.

The team was serious about a Tokyo based GTA game, they travelled to Tokyo to take reference photos, meet locals and more for Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo.

This all happened during GTA 3 and Vice City. The project was eventually canned due to “The road system”, it was “seen to be problematic and became one reason the idea was canned.” The source adds, “as time has gone on, Rockstar has realized the difficulty in moving Grand Theft Auto outside of the USA, where it has firmly embedded itself.

There are a number of series staples, from brands to cars, that Rockstar would likely have to change if a future GTA was set somewhere else.”

In December 2003, Take-Two Interactive had filed trademarks for GTA: Tokyo, GTA: bogota and Grand Theft Auto: Sin City.

The source adds, “Rockstar has realized the difficulty in moving Grand Theft Auto outside of the USA, where it has firmly embedded itself. There are a number of series staples, from brands to cars, that Rockstar would likely have to change if a future GTA was set somewhere else.”
