Codemasters has officially announced GRID: Autosport, an upcoming racing video game sequel to 2013’s Grid 2 and “descendant of TOCA Touring Cars.”

“The game aims to move the series back in line as a more authentic racing game.

With GRID Autosport we had the opportunity to make a much more focussed motorsport game, a desire that many of you have expressed directly to us, and a game that in spirit goes back to some of our earlier titles in terms of content and handling,” said community manager, Ben Walke.

Ben Walke adds, “At its heart, inspired by you guys, our core community. On release of GRID 2, I think it’s fair to say that through listening to you guys and a after a substantial amount of reflection, we hadn’t quite achieved everything we set out to do.

We’re proud of the game, really delighted with some of the great reviews for it, but we’re not above admitting that we made a few decisions that perhaps we shouldn’t have, and perhaps moved some of the aspects of the game too far away from our core fanbase.

If GRID 2 raced off into a more narrative-led world of racing with more accessible controls, it’s clear that for many of you, that wasn’t what you wanted or expected from GRID 2.

So with GRID Autosport we had the opportunity to make a much more focussed motorsport game, a desire that many of you have expressed directly to us, and a game that in spirit goes back to some of our earlier titles in terms of content and handling.”

Walke explains on Neogaf, why the game won’t available on next-gen: “Ultimately it comes down to a few things. The first is that we genuinely want our first next gen outing to be something really great, we don’t want to have to rush and only put out a handful of tracks.

We’ve got 22 locations in Autosport, the bulk of those are real world circuits, would all those have made it if we were to support next gen? Doubtful. Secondly, we’re working our tech for next-gen now, as such, we’re not quite ready. Again, we don’t want to rush :)

Thirdly, after GRID 2 we sort of had something to prove, we wanted to leave the ‘old gen’ with a bit of a bang so to speak.”

GRID: Autosport launches on June 27, 2014 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
