Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures & Marvel Studios’ 2014 American superhero film, Guardians of the Galaxy is getting a sequel, director James Gunn and Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/Star-Lord) announced during Hall H presentation at Comic-Con International 2014.

The first film doesn’t hit theaters in US until this Friday, August 1. Anyways read what James said after the announcement on his Facebook page: “So, anyway, just now at Comicon a filmed bit with me and Chris Pratt played where we announced the sequel to #GuardiansoftheGalaxy, which we’re working on to release in theaters on July 28, 2017.

Yes, I suppose this is ballsy, considering the film hasn’t even been released yet, but I guess I just can’t let go of that damn raccoon!”

The film is based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It will be the tenth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Directed by James Gunn, who wrote the screenplay with Nicole Perlman, it features an ensemble cast including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, and Benicio del Toro.

Previous week, Marvel announced their movies line up through 2019, the studio didn’t provide the names but they did give us the dates, new films hit theaters on July 28 (GOTG Sequel) & November 3, 2017; May 4, July 6 & November 2, 2018; and May 3, 2019.

Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters on August 1, 2014 in 3D and IMAX. The sequel will hit theaters July 28, 2017.
