At a recent press event, Assassin’s Creed III creative director Alex Hutchinson said, that it was time the story of modern-day protagonist Desmond Miles ultimately ends.
According to Hutchinson: “It’s more like the Twilight Zone. There’s always a guy introducing it and he’s there every episode, but each game completes its own story. ”
“Assassin’s Creed 1 was Altair’s story. Ezio has been and gone. You can engage with these historical stories individually without having to necessarily understand Desmond’s story. But yes, we eventually do have to wrap it up.”
“I think what you do is you finish it,” said Hutchinson. “It’s not the only conceit you can use. There’s other ways you can frame the experience. I always pitched it to the guys on this game to think of it almost like Star Trek. Each game is a season […] each big number is a sub-title. We’re not changing the universe, but we’re being given the reins to the equivalent of [Star Trek:] The Next Generation. Yes, it’s the Star Trek universe, and that has certain immutable laws and there’s a base kind of tone to it, but within that you can do whatever you want.”
Hutchinson said Assassin’s Creed III is as close to a new IP, as the game itself contains a new character, story, setting, and mechanics. The only thing that remains, he said, is Desmond.
“Without the Desmond,” said Hutchinson, “we could have called it anything else, and people would have said okay. It’s just we like the wrapper of being an assassin and being in this continuing war against Templars. There’s huge value in that. But [Assassin’s Creed III] is 90% a new game.”
“I think Desmond needs to end, at some point. You know what I mean? Things that go on too long lack resonance. We’re asking people to remember seven years worth of story. Which is like saying you were in junior high and now you’re finishing college. And you need to remember what you were doing in junior high.”
Previously, Ubisoft revealed Assassin’s Creed III ‘Wolfpack’ Co-Op Multiplayer.
Assassin’s Creed III will release on October 30 for PC, PS3, Xbox360 and Wii U.

Quite Honestly I prefer desmond to stay and you finish the Series without the Animus, You Are Desmond – The Modern Day Assassin. You have been desmonds ancestors throughout through the animus its only fitting that desmonds virtual training gets its own title to wrap up the series and put an end to the templars.
I say that In the next Assassin's Creed after the upcoming one that Desmond has a child in the beginning of the game and you carry on as him in whatever type of storyline they make up with it and that is how they can get more in depth with the game. Either that or they should instead go with one of Desmond's childhood friends and see what there story was like because that would be pretty interesting if they have a similar experience like Desmond because maybe there ancestors were associated with Ezio and Altair in a way
I think it would be cool if they had a game like Assassin's Creed:Origins and we went back to the start of the war over free will between the Assassin's and the Templar's.
Quite Honestly I believe that Desmond should not simply be cut out of the franchise, IT began with desmond and it must end with desmond in the modern era. Don't let his training and experiences of his ancestors through the animus be a waste of time to follow.
I still to this day keep replaying all 4 current AC Games in anticipation of III i have III on pre-order and I aim to keep my assassin skills dropped.
The only thing im sick of seeing in AC is an MP mode i hate it.. I loved the fact that AC was based on a great story.
Couldn't have said it better myself. We need some REAL time with Desmond. And ditch the MP! Its boring.
We started as Desmond you should at least end as Desmond because this is HIS story. I understand the game is about the animus and past ancestor but still. Desmond learn how to fight and free run through the bleeding effect through his ancestor Ezio Auditore in 3 games and now soon Connor Kenway. Desmond is far beyond a normal assassin after taking all of those skills and waste them, no thats stupid. if Desmond so happens to save the world there should be a game with just him and maybe reliving his ancestor without the animus, finally stab Warren Vidic, defeat the Templar order once and for all. after that is over then you can do spin-offs or make an assassin's creed game without knowing the subject or no subject and no animus just the ancestor, that would be nice
NOOOOOOOOOO! I live Desmond!
hell yeah!!! )
they’ve barely done any desmond story in comparison to his ancestors… he’s always been a kind of backdrop to the narrative. they need to devote a good portion of AC:III to desmond alone for me (and many others) to be satisfied.
So good…
