Konami’s upcoming action-adventure game Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will be the last game to be developed by MercurySteam, according to producer Dave Cox.

Speaking with Destructoid at San Diego Comic Con, Cox said, “I’ve always thought that this was a torch being passed down. Nobody on the team ever felt like we owned Castlevania.

We always felt it was our responsibility now but it wouldn’t be ours forever. Let’s do what we’re going to do, tell our story, and move on.”

“So we’ve told Japan headquarters that this is the last one for us… there’s nothing worse than when somebody’s got something to say, and when they’ve said it, they just keep talking. We’ve got a beginning and end, and it’s a cool ending and a cool story.

Once we’ve done that, it’s time to say to somebody else, ‘now it’s your turn.’ Maybe it will be a young producer in the company looking for his first break. I think you’ve got to bring in fresh blood,” he added.

(Different interview) Gamespot reports, during a Comic-Con round-table interview, Cox said, “Konami has learned a great many lessons as it relates to performance capture for the series and suggested these lessons could be applied to an all-new game.

We have to really plan differently and do things differently. And we’ve made mistakes on this one, as well, which we’re going to hopefully improve for the next one. I think it’s a learning process and I think game developers are learning every day how to do things better.”

Dave Cox confirmed that MercurySteam is moving away from Lords of Shadow series because they have nothing left to say.

“I think if you’ve got something to say, you should just say it, and when you’re done, just shut up,and we’ve got something to say. And once it’s out there…I think it’s time for somebody else; somebody younger, a younger producer to come in and take up the mantle and do what they think would be right for Castlevania and for us to move on to something else.”

“I think Castlevania is a series that has evolved over the 26 years to what it is today and I think it’s in good shape right now and I think people will really enjoy the last one,” he added. “There’s a lot of surprises and I think we’re going to deliver something unexpected”, he concluded.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, developed for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC will be released this winter.
