Borderlands 2 is bigger and better than the original, says Gearbox VP Steve Gibson.
Speaking in the latest issue of Game Master, Gibson said, “the scale of some of the sequel’s cities simply wouldn’t have been possible to include in the first Borderlands.” via CVG
“I wouldn’t be surprised if it was about 50-60% bigger [than Borderlands 1], but it’s also so much denser. Heck, just the city of Sanctuary, something like that couldn’t exist in the first game. Our technology has evolved a lot to enable us to do that now,” he said.
“A decision that was made at the very beginning of the game was that at no point at any time could someone in the story or design team ever assume that some person has played Borderlands. You just start it from scratch.”
“There are cute winks at different things. For example, we have this thing where if you played the first one we detect your saved game and you get some cool unlocks,” he added.
Previously, Gibson commented about Borderlands 2 campaign length saying “What we like to think about it is, Borderlands is a hobby. Some guide guys just did a playthrough of Borderlands 2 and they reported back to us that it takes 58 hours to play through the campaign – and that’s just one playthrough with one character.”
“We look at it as a hobby, and that isn’t even counting the new Badass Points system and how that’ll affect every character you do. We want it to feel like you get more for your money. We’re happy for people to pay their money once and feel that they get ongoing value.”
Borderlands 2 features four new characters and many new features of the first shooter-RPG original and is one of the most anticipated games of 2012. It is set for release on September 18 in the US and on September 21 internationally for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
