Now that Battlefield3 is nearing release, DICE gives us a closer look at four of the nine multiplayer maps that ship with ‘Battlefield 3,’ which includes Operation Metro, Operation Firestorm, Damavand Peak, and Tehran Highway.

In a post over on the Battlefield blog, DICE revealed and detailed 4 new maps

OPERATION MÉTRO

Working title: Metro
Dice internal designation: MP015
Supported game modes: All
Brief: Infantry focused combat in subway

Fiction: Heavy fighting is expected as U.S. forces push to secure the financial district in central Paris. Russian anti-air emplacements in Chardonnay Park are likely to be the first target.

Operation Metro : A map that is already all-too familiar with those who have have played it to death in the Battlefield 3 beta: Operation Metro. There’s a reason this map was chosen for the beta, because it is essentially three maps in one.

TEHRAN HIGHWAY

Working title: Highway
Dice internal designation: MP003
Supported game modes: All
Brief: Infantry fighting in tight city streets

Fiction: A fight for control of access routes near Tehran. U.S. forces make a push from the hills under cover of darkness while Russians have set up defensive positions along the main entrance points.

Tehran Highway is one of Battlefield 3’s multiplayer maps that is set at night. It’s biggest appeal, besides moving from rural terrain to a city’s outskirts, is showcasing the Frostbite 2.0 engine at its finest. The map was inspired by a real photo of Tehran’s night skyline. It’s said to have a balanced mix of infantry and vehicle combat, with one part of the map being designed mostly for infantry combat.

DAMAVAND PEAK

Working title: Base Jump
Dice internal designation: MP013
Supported game modes: All
Brief: Fighting in winter mountains

Fiction: A rugged mountain area plays a major role in deciding whether Russian or U.S. troops are successful in combat operations in the sector, as the area is home to key radar installations.

The map is known as “Base Jump”, and for good reason. Players will start atop a high-up mountain ridge and will need to make the 500-meter decent down to the mining facility below – in other words, you’ll need to base jump to get into the action. That’s right, you read correctly, attacking teams in matches of Rush will start first on a precipice high above a mining facility, a facility that can only be raided by parachuting soldiers. Sounds awesome.

OPERATION FIRESTORM

Working title: Oilfields
Dice internal designation: MP012
Supported game modes: All
Brief: All-out desert warfare

Fiction: U.S. and Russia launch large-scale assaults to control Iran’s biggest source of oil. Securing this area will offer full control of the sector and its key facilities.

Operation Firestorm (which was recently shown off to press) is Battlefield 3’s “largest and most vehicle-friendly map” and seems to be very much inspired by the film Jarhead. It’s an open map, much like Caspian Border, this is one of the game’s largest maps. It’s a desert map with oil fires raging on one end and clear, blue skies on the other with construction sites scattered about the map for infantry players to shack up in. It could hold some of Bad Company 2’s larger maps within its borders.
