English actor and film producer, Benedict Cumberbatch has entered final negotiations to play Doctor Strange in Marvel’s upcoming superhero film, according to Deadline.
Cumberbatch was among a number of actors rumored for the role, including Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix & Tom Hardy.
Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange (known as Doctor Strange) is a former neurosurgeon and Master of the Mystic Arts who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.
Created by Stan Lee & Steve Ditko, Dr. Strange debuted in July 1963 in marvel’s comic book anthology series, Strange Tales #110, a split book shared with fellow Marvel character the Human Torch.
The character was inspired by the Chandu the Magician radio program that aired on the Mutual Broadcasting System in the 1930s.
“Doctor Strange is typically the world’s foremost expert on magic, but it wasn’t always that way.
Earlier in his life, he was an arrogant professional surgeon, but when a car accident took his fine motor skills away from him, he became desperate and searched the globe for a cure.
One was offered, not to cure his hands, but instead to cure his soul.”
The film will be directed by Scott Derrickson, plot details are yet to be revealed. Doctor Strange is expected to be the major character in Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Three, it is set to hit theaters on July 8, 2016.
