DICE has finally demonstrated Battlefield 3 gameplay running on consoles, and in particular the PlayStation 3. The studio played the game on Sony’s console live on Late Night with Jimmy Falon last night.

This marks the first time that the Frostbite 2 powered FPS has been shown running on any console, with EA and DICE choosing to showcase the game on high-end PCs up until now.

The single-player BF3 campaign level focused on destructible cover, with two RPG gunners overhead. One was on a balcony, while the other an adjacent rooftop. Without having to wait for the enemies to pop up from their cover, Fallon was able to shoot them through their cement hiding places. The show’s host was also surprised by the blood that appeared on the screen that wasn’t his own. The splatter came from a fellow soldier who went down in front of him. At this point, he aptly called the game both “scary” and “realistic.”

The best line of the night wasn’t from Fallon, however. When the EA’s Kevin O’Leary pulled an injured squadmate from the hot zone, Fallon asked if you could just hide the entire time, saying that’s what he would do. The O’Leary quipped “You can just hide, but that’s not the name of the game. This isn’t Hiddlefield 3.”

Of course, Jimmy Fallon got the last word in by shouting the game’s October 25 release date, which – he didn’t mention once – is two weeks ahead of military FPS-rival Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. It’s also one week ahead Uncharted 3, which Fallon demoed the previous night as part of Late Night’s Video Game Week.
