Sony Pictures & Rovio’s animated action-adventure comedy film based on the video game series, Angry Birds takes away the top spot from Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War.
The film grossed $800,000 from its Thursday night previews and $11 million on Friday, $16.2 million on Saturday & $11.7 million on Sunday for a opening weekend total of $39 million, finishing at No 1 spot at the box office and marked the third biggest Sony Animated opening of all the time, behind Hotel Transylvania and Hotel Transylvania 2.
It also earned the second spot as the best debut weekend for a video game adaption, behind Lara Croft: Tomb Raider‘s $47 million debut.
As of May 22, 2016, The Angry Birds Movie has grossed $39 million in North America and $112 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $151 million, against a budget of $73 million.
Captain America: Civil War become the first 2016 release to cross $1 billion worldwide in just 24 days of global release. The film brought in an estimated $33.1 million this weekend, bringing in the domestic total to $347.3 million.
As of May 22, 2016, Captain America: Civil War has grossed $347.4 million in North America and $706.1 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $1.053 billion.
Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse launched overseas a week ahead of its domestic debut and grossed over $100 million.
Angry Birds Movie opened alongside Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and The Nice Guys, opening with $8.7 million & $3.9 million on Friday respectively.
Neighbors 2 was projected to gross $35–40 million from 3,384 theaters in its opening weekend. It grossed $1.7 million during its Thursday night previews (lower than the original’s $2.5 million) and $8.7 million on its first day with opening weekend total of $21.8 million, which is less than the previous film’s $49 million opening and projections, taking third spot at the box office.
The Nice Guys was projected to gross around $10 million from 2,865 theaters in its opening weekend. It grossed $700,000 during its Thursday night previews and $3.9 million on its first day with opening weekend gross of $11.3 million, finishing fourth at the box office behind The Angry Birds Movie ($39 million), Captain America: Civil War ($33.1 million) and Neighbors 2 ($21.8 million).
