Walt Disney Pictures is developing a live-action Aladdin prequel, Genie. It will tell the story of Genie before he meets Aladdin.
The Genie character was portrayed by Robin Williams in the first film. Now Jim Meskimen currently voices him, right after Robin Williams’ passing on August 11, 2014.
According to THR, Genie live-action comedy adventure is being written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. Tripp Vinson is on board to produce via his Vinson Films banner.
The prequel will explore the realm of the Genies and reveal how Genie was trapped inside the iconic lamp. This movie will lead into an live-action retelling of Aladdin.
Aladdin is a 1992 American animated musical fantasy film. The 31st animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series.
It was directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, based on the Arab-style folktale of Aladdin and the magic lamp from One Thousand and One Nights.
The voice cast featured Scott Weinger, Jonathan Freeman, Robin Williams, Linda Larkin, Frank Welker, Gilbert Gottfried, and Douglas Seale.
Both the films are part of Disney’s growing roster of live-action fairy tales. including The Jungle Book (April 15, 2016), Beauty and the Beast (March 17, 2017), Tinker Bell, Dumbo, Winnie the Pooh, Fantasia‘s Night on Bald Mountain, as well as sequels for Alice in Wonderland (May 27, 2016) & Maleficent.
