Square Enix’s action role-playing game, Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is expected to release within the next year, according to game director, Hajime Tabata.

FF Type-0 HD is an ‘speedy, action-oriented spin on the series’ formula featuring real-time battles with the 14 playable characters.’

Speaking with Joystiq, Hajime Tabata said “We probably wouldn’t age another year until it’s released.

We really do want the PS4 and Xbox One install base to grow in Japan as well. So we do want a release as quickly as possible.”

He stressed that FF Type-0 HD is approaching a more mature tone compared to other games in the series, including magic and special abilities acting as ‘devastating attacks’ that can cause enemies to burn to death.

When the game launched in Japan, Square Enix received feedback around the steep difficultly. For the western release, developers implemented four difficulty modes and tuned the combat balance, so the HD port will “makes sense for the big screen,” Tabata explained.

The publisher had initial plans to release PSP version of Final Fantasy Type-0 to the western market after its October 2011 launch in Japan, but due to PSP market decline they cancelled the plans.

“After we released the Japanese version, and then it would go into localization, the U.S. PSP market at the time was kind of shrinking. It wasn’t the best time for us to garner the best results. So that was the biggest reason why we had to forgo the PSP version for the overseas market,” he said.

The publisher did think about creating a Vita version of the game before considering a HD port for Xbox One and PS4, but they are considering to make the game compatible with Vita via Remote Play.

Tabata believes that a bigger screen is a better fit for game, since the development of Final Fantasy XV moved from PS3, XBox 360 to PS4, Xbox One in mid 2012.

Previously, FF Type-0 HD is currently 80% complete.

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD western release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was confirmed at E3 2014.
